employee volunteers

The organizations that are part of Highmark Health have a decades-long legacy of employee volunteering. In 2017, Highmark Health employees logged over 90,000 volunteer hours to help strengthen their communities. In addition to participating in national Make a Difference Day and the United Way Day of Caring, Highmark Health has several programs to empower employee volunteers:

  • Volunteer Day Off gives employees an extra paid day off to volunteer during normal work hours.
  • VolunteerMatch, an online system, sorts volunteer opportunities by location, causes, and skills, tracks volunteer hours and provides up-to-date project information.
  • Volunteer Grant lets employee volunteers use their first-hand knowledge of organizations they serve to apply for Highmark Health grant money.

Make a Difference Day

Every year, millions of people across the United States volunteer and perform projects for their community, for individuals in need and for charitable organizations. Founded in 1992 when USA Weekend, the second largest national newspaper at the time, suggested to readers that since 1992 was a leap year, people should take the extra day to give back to their communities and those in need. The idea caught on and has been celebrated across the United States ever since. Each year, Highmark Health employees are proud to collectively volunteer over 100 hours toward dozens of community projects throughout our locations in observance of Make a Difference Day.

Jefferson Awards Champion

In 1972, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis with U.S. Senator Robert Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard created the Jefferson Awards. The Jefferson Awards is the country’s most prestigious organization dedicated to celebrating public service. In 2006, the Jefferson Awards Champions program was established to assist organizations with employee volunteer recognition programs. Highmark became a Jefferson Awards Champion company in 2007, and continues to be today, allowing us to honor our employees with this prestigious award. As a Jefferson Awards Champion company, focusing on our community is an important corporate value that allows us to recognize our employees across the Highmark Health enterprise for their community commitment.

Among other activities, as a Jefferson Awards Champion we annually recognize 12 employees for extraordinary volunteerism and award each a Jefferson Award for Public Service medallion along with a $1,000 donation to a nonprofit of their choice.
